About this project

This Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Detroit, Michigan, is recognized as the largest, single-site wastewater treatment facility in the United States. It allows peak inflows of 1.6 billion gallons per day and provides treatment for the wastewater generated by as many as four million people.

The project scope involved as-needed instrumentation and controls system repair, refurbishment, engineering, installation and construction administration assistance, procurement, and training services throughout the plant. It also included the identification of system deficiencies, mechanical or structural deterioration, operational constraints, and reliability concerns related to the compliance with long-term water quality objectives.

Sigma, as the Prime Consultant, evaluated the utility’s ability to meet pending and anticipated regulatory requirements. Our team also planned a rehabilitation program for the improvement or replacement of outdated or failing components throughout the plant and combined sewer overflow control facilities. This work included the upgrade of technology and equipment for reliability and operational flexibility, reduction of required maintenance, and increase in the utility’s capability to treat an additional 340-mgd at acceptable hydraulic and process loading rates.
